Ferro-silicon
Ferrosilicon is made from coke, steel scrap and quartz (silica) through electric furnace smelting. Silicon dioxide is easily synthesized by silicon and oxygen. Therefore, ferrosilicon is commonly used as deoxidizing agent for steelmaking. The molten steel temperature is raised and energy consumption for steelmaking is reduced during deoxygenation due to a great deal of heat emitted during generation of SiO2. As a kind of alloy addition agent, ferrosilicon is widely applied to low alloy structural steel, alloy structural steel, spring steel, ball bearing steel, heat resistant steel and electrical silicon steel, and is commonly used for production of monocrystalline silicon or preparation of non-ferrous alloy. Ferrosilicon is an essential deoxidizing agent in steel industry and is widely applied to the production in steel industry, foundry industry and other industries.
